Ryan’s English Language Arts (ELA) department seeks to prepare our students to become independent learners proficient in writing, close reading, and critical thinking, equipping them for the demands of college/career level communication. Throughout our curriculum, students are introduced to a variety of readings across a multitude of literary genres. Cooperative learning features and class discussions are a few of the major components of ELA classes, supported by meaningful student-centered involvement. With teacher guidance, students at Ryan develop responsibility for their learning, assume leadership roles and make decisions within the classroom setting. It is through the English Language Arts curriculum that our students broaden their interpretative and evaluative skills, thus establishing the ability to make connections within their reading, writing, and experiences.
